Loft Insulation
Loft Insulation Grants are available to completely cover the cost of having Loft Insulation fitted.
Up to 25% of the heat lost in your home escapes through the roof. Loft Insulation helps to prevent this heat loss and save you money on your heating bills. Loft Insulation also has the opposite effect in the summer by keeping you cooler.
Please see our home page for an overview of the Insulation Grants and the benefits of installing home insulation.
What Is Loft Insulation?
Loft Insulation acts as a blanket, trapping any heat rising from the house below. The current government standard is a depth of 270mm or 11". If your loft has not been insulated in the last 10 years, it will most likely require topping up. The insulation is installed between and then across the joists.
Loft insulation decreases the amount of heat escaping through the roof. The process is quick, clean and FREE or inexpensive to install. Installation typically takes around one hour and includes insulating pipes & water tanks, in addition to insulating and draughtproofing the hatch. If your water tanks are more than 1m from the hatch, a walk board will also be fitted.
The Savings
If you have no loft insulation and you install the recommended 270mm depth you could save between £180 and £220 per. year on your heating bills and nearly 1.5 tonnes of CO2. If your loft requires topping up to the recommended 270mm depth, you could save up to £200 per. year and 400Kg of CO2. These figures are provided by The Energy Saving Trust and are based on an average size property heated by gas. Greater savings can be made in larger properties or those heated by coal or electricity.

Is Your Property Suitable?
A surveyor will check for any problems but Loft Insulation cannot be installed if:
- There is no access or access is restricted. There must be a hatch or other access point that one person can easily fit through. If there is no hatch or it is too small, most of our installers can arrange for one to be fitted.
- There are a large quantity of stored items and you are not prepared to clear them. Installers can work around a few items but they will not move large quantities for you.
- You need boards to be lifted for you. If your loft is boarded out we can lay insulation over the top. Alternatively, you can lift the boards before the insulation is laid and then replace them afterwards but they will have to be raised due to the extra thickness. We cannot lift or replace any boards for you.
- There is any damp present. Loft Insulation can help to prevent condensation but all other damp problems must be cured before it can be installed.
- You would like sloping roof (under the tiles), flat roof or underfloor insulation. We cannot obtain any grants nor install this type of insulation. We can only install insulation to the floor of a loft i.e. between and across the joists.
- You require Thermafleece or any other type of specialist loft insulation. We can only obtain grants for mineral wool insulation. Not many people realise that mineral wool is a natural product as it is derived from sand.
N.B. We cannot access Insulation Grants if you have done or intend to do the work yourself. Our grants only cover the supply AND installation of the material.
If you are unsure of the suitability, please continue to apply.
