Apply for a Home Insulation Grant to help fight Fuel Poverty

07 December 2011

Recent figures, published in the Guardian, show that a quarter of all households in England, Scotland and Wales – up from nearly one in five last year - have now fallen into Fuel Poverty.

The increasing number of homes in Fuel Poverty – defined by the Government as those which spend 10% or more of their net income on gas and electricity – are a result of higher energy bills and stagnating or declining incomes.

The figures follow a Summer of price rises by each of the big six energy suppliers and have placed extra strain on household finances.

However, there is help available in the form of Government Grants – including for Cavity Wall Insulation and Loft Insulation - which can cover up to 100% of the cost of Home Insulation.

A home with Loft Insulation and Cavity Wall Insulation will better retain heat and, according to the Energy Saving Trust, can subsequently reduce energy bills by up to £310 per year.

This saving could help a household out of Fuel Poverty and the current Government Grants are available to all home owners and private tenants in the UK.

To qualify for a 100% free Insulation Grant, home owners and private tenants must be aged 70 and above, or in receipt of certain benefits, tax credits or allowances. Those not entitled to a full Insulation Grant will still receive help for between 40-70% of the cost.

The Government Grants for Home Insulation are due to end in Winter 2012 when they are scheduled to be replaced by the Green Deal, although there is likely to be an overlap with the Green Deal expected to launch in October 2012.

Through the Green Deal, customers will be able to install energy efficient measures with the cost recovered through charges on the household’s energy bills.

Home owners and private tenants, therefore, are encouraged to act fast and take advantage of the non-repayable Insulation Grants while they are still available, to help prevent Fuel Poverty, as well as to tackle rising costs and falling temperatures.
