ECO Grants Benefit Berwick Residents

25 November 2013

Residents in the Northumberland town of Berwick-upon-Tweed are benefiting from energy efficient home improvements thanks to grants procured under the Government’s energy saving initiatives.

More than 100 homes in the region have already been made more energy efficient with another 400 also earmarked for improvement.

The improvements are being carried out by energy service specialists MITIE with funding obtained through the Energy Company Obligation.

The Energy Company Obligation, which launched at the beginning of the year, allows low-income and ‘at risk’ householders to apply for a grant to make energy saving improvements to their property. Measures available include Cavity Wall Insulation, External Wall Insulation and Loft Insulation.

The Government recently reported that more than 300,000 measures had already been carried out under the scheme.

Berwick residents are the latest to benefit from funding from the Energy Company Obligation. Since August, 103 properties in the Highcliffe area have been fitted with energy efficient home improvements, including External Wall Insulation.

MITIE representative Ben Jenkinson reports that 250 properties in the Highcliffe area have been identified for improvement. Similar work has also started in the Newfields area of the town, where another 250 properties have been earmarked for energy efficient improvements.

“The idea is to make homes cheaper to run and warmer to live in,” Jenkinson told the Berwick Advertiser.

“We’ve been incredibly successful in delivering the highest quality standards and attracting grants to cover the cost of the works.”

The Energy Company Obligation grants are designed to help those living in fuel poverty that struggle to cover the cost of their fuel bill. But residents that do not meet the criteria to receive a grant are not being left out.

Speaking with the Berwick Advertiser, Jenkinson explained: “Regardless of whether you own your own home or rent, MITIE can access grant funding to dramatically reduce the cost of these works and can also access the Government backed Green Deal finance monies.”

The Green Deal, which launched alongside the Energy Company Obligation, allows householders to take out a low-interest loan to pay for green measures, including External Wall Insulation, Cavity Wall Insulation, Loft Insulation, and more than 40 other measures.

A Green Deal loan is repaid directly through a property’s electricity bill but the cost of repayments must not exceed the sum of savings made, meaning residents should not be out of pocket.

Green Deal loans are available to all Berwick residents as well as householders across England, Scotland and Wales.
