Green Deal Explained in New Online Resource

10 June 2013

A new online resource providing a comprehensive explanation and overview of the Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation is available now.

Created by the National Skills Academy for Environmental Technologies, the resource provides a wide-ranging look at each of the Government’s high-profile energy efficiency initiatives, beginning with why they were put into place and continuing on to how they work.

The Energy Company Obligation was launched at the beginning of the year with the intention of providing improved energy efficiency to those in high-risk geographical locations as well as low-income families.

Under the governmental scheme, householders can apply for a grant to pay for energy-saving improvements like Cavity Wall Insulation, Loft Insulation, and Solid Wall Insulation. The funding for the scheme is sourced from major energy suppliers, who are legally obliged to help reduce carbon emissions in the UK.

The Green Deal – also launched in January – operates in a similar manner to the Energy Company Obligation. Again, householders can have energy-saving home improvements made under the scheme, although grants are replaced by loans.

Those households utilising the Green Deal to make improvements such as Solid Wall Insulation, Cavity Wall Insulation, and Loft Insulation, repay the sum borrowed through their energy bill, and will not pay more in repayments than they save by making the changes in the first place.

These are the basics that make up the beginning of the National Skills Academy’s online resource.

The online course has been designed primarily with installers in mind, but is actually beneficial to those working within the industry as well as those curious about the two schemes.

"Green Deal training really comes to life with our new online course,” said Cathryn Hickey, executive director of the National Skills Academy.

“This interactive tool is highly engaging, enabling quick and easy access to additional documents, policies and snippets of information, which all help to provide a solid grounding in the Government's new scheme. Users can review information at any time and even test their knowledge at the end of each module.

"In designing this course, we aim to raise awareness of all the key areas surrounding the Green Deal, establishing a workforce that is properly equipped to facilitate the success of the scheme."
