Green Deal and ECO Roadshow for Landlords

8 April 2013

A new initiative is being launched to promote awareness of Government schemes relating to climate change and energy efficiency to landlords.

National Energy Action (NEA) has organised a series of roadshow events across the UK to update landlords with information relating to the Green Deal and the Energy Company Obligation (ECO).

The events, which are known as ‘landlord dissemination events’, will include speakers from British Gas and the National Landlord’s Association, as well as input from the National Insulation Association (NIA).

The first event is scheduled to take place at the Mercure Piccadilly Hotel in Manchester on 12th March.

Targeting Landlords

NEA – a national charity working towards eradicating fuel poverty in the UK – is launching its current initiative to reach out to landlords in the private sector.

According to the organisation: “The private rented sector has a higher incidence of cold hazards than any other housing sector, and this is a particular issue for older properties that may not be well insulated or lack modern heating systems.”

The NEA, together with its partners, is hoping to educate landlords as to the benefits of Cavity Wall Insulation, Solid Wall Insulation, Loft Insulation and Boiler Replacement.

Each of these actions is featured in the Government’s Green Deal, a new scheme instigated to improve the energy efficiency of households in the UK. Householders can apply for either a grant or loan to cover the cost of these home improvements.

On the Agenda

The series of six landlord dissemination events will focus on how landlords can benefit from the Green Deal and ECO.

According to the NIA, Cavity Wall Insulation can save the average household approximately £140 per year. Loft Insulation can save £180 per annum while Solid Wall Insulation offers average savings of £475 each year.

Low income households and those in areas of abject fuel poverty are entitled to all of these improvements, and 40 others, under the Green Deal.

The NIA – which represents the UK insulation industry, and includes manufacturers and installers amongst its numbers – is hoping to convince landlords that by initiating home improvements such as those listed above, they can improve the health and wellbeing of tenants whilst also helping to boost the UK economy.

Landlord dissemination events will take place at the following locations:

Tues. 12 Mar: Manchester (Mercure Piccadilly Hotel)
Mon. 18 Mar: Newcastle (Centre for Life)
Thur. 18 Apr: Leicester (British Gas Energy Academy)
Wed. 24 Apr: London (Prospero House, Borough High Street)
Wed. 1 May: Glasgow (Grand Central Hotel)
Thur. 13 Jun: Cardiff (Park Plaza Hotel)
