New Energy Efficiency Scheme For Cambridgeshire Residents

22 November 2013

Cambridgeshire residents will soon be able to benefit from a local scheme devised to help cut the cost of energy bills in the region.

The Action on Energy scheme is designed to help local residents save money on their energy bills and encourage the reduction of carbon emissions through the installation of energy saving home improvements.

Residents will be able to apply for financial assistance that will allow them to install energy saving measures such as Loft Insulation, Cavity Wall Insulation, Solid Wall Insulation and more than 40 other home improvements.

The scheme comes with the support of Cambridge City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council, Fenland District Council, Huntingdonshire District Council, and South Cambridgeshire District Council.

Residents in Cambridge, Huntingdon, St. Neots, Wisbech and many of the county’s other towns and villages will be able to benefit from the scheme.

Action on Energy will come under the umbrella of the Government’s Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation initiatives.

£45 million of funding has been secured for the scheme over the next three years as part of the Energy Company Obligation.

This funding will be used to offer grants to low-income families and vulnerable residents, with a focus being placed on the elderly and those at risk from fuel poverty. These grants can then be used to pay for home insulation and boiler replacement.

Those residents that do not meet the criteria for a grant will not be left out. The scheme also allows for Green Deal loans to be taken out, with the householder paying the loan back via their electricity bill. Under the ‘golden rule’ of this scheme, the cost of repayment must not exceed the amount saved by installing the energy saving measures in the first place, meaning householders should not be out of pocket.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, local residents could save up to £490 per year by installing Solid Wall Insulation; £140 through Cavity Wall Insulation; £180 via Loft Insulation; and £310 by changing to an efficient boiler.

Action on Energy will be overseen by Climate Energy, a premier energy efficiency specialist that is a registered Green Deal provider. The local councils also hope to be able to offer installation work to local businesses.

The scheme is due to launch on 1st December.
