What is an Insulation Survey?

Before you can benefit from Loft or Cavity Wall Insulation, one of our approved installers will need to carry out a free survey of your property, which should last no longer than 30 minutes.

This will check that your home is suitable for the relevant type of insulation, but there is no obligation afterwards to go ahead with the installation process.

If you want to take advantage of both Cavity Wall and Loft Insulation, you will require two separate surveys. Both have no obligations to proceed and are entirely free.

  • No obligation to go ahead with work.
  • Makes sure your property is suitable.
  • Verifies your grant entitlement.
  • Quote given if partial grant.
  • Takes around 20 to 30 minutes.

Why do I need an Insulation Survey?

To claim a grant for Loft or Cavity Wall Insulation, there are certain criteria that your home must meet. An Insulation Survey will check these for you and verify your grant entitlement.

Loft Insulation Grants can only be awarded if there is currently no insulation or insulation to a depth of up to 60mm (2.5”) for a full grant and up to 100mm (4”) for a partial one.

As well as checking your eligibility for a free grant, the home Insulation Survey will also assess whether your property is physically suitable for Loft or Cavity Wall Insulation.

This will include surveying for damp problems, which need to be dealt with before insulation is installed, and also looking for other factors such as adequate ventilation and loft access.

What will happen during my Loft Insulation Survey?

While most households can enjoy the energy bill savings that come with Loft Insulation, there are some important things to be checked beforehand in a Loft Insulation Survey, including:

  • Depth of insulation required
  • Size of the area which needs to be insulated
  • Amount of pipe work to be lagged
  • Number of cold water tanks to be insulated
  • Position of the hatch in relation to tanks and pipes
  • Whether ventilation is adequate
  • Whether there is damp present

What will happen during my Cavity Wall Insulation Survey?

Cavity Wall Insulation is a great way to save money on your heating bills but unfortunately not every home is suitable. The Cavity Wall Insulation Survey will assess the following:

  • Width of the cavity in your walls
  • Area of insulation required
  • Type of structure
  • Services through the cavity
  • Whether the cavity is free of debris
  • If the damp course is defective or not
  • Whether the cavity tops are sealed
  • Condition of the structure
  • Whether ventilation is adequate
  • Whether damp is present

How long will it take for the insulation company to contact me?

If you apply for Loft or Cavity Wall Insulation in the summer, it should take no longer than a week before you are contacted by one of our approved insulation companies.

In the run up to the colder months, however, it can take longer as the winter rush begins and a flurry of households look to cut their energy bills while making their homes warmer.

What we can’t do

While we endeavour to help all of our customers make the most of Cavity Wall and Loft Insulation, there are some situations which we can not assist with. We cannot arrange for you to have your loft Insulated if it has floorboards that you are unable to lift up, if there is already insulation in your loft that is over the 100mm (4”) depth limit or if there are accessibility or damp problems which can’t be rectified.

Cavity Wall Insulation cannot be installed by an EnergyLink-approved company if you live in a flat and do not have permission from neighbours above or below, if there is a damp problem which is untreatable or if your cavity walls have debris. Read more about EnergyLink Ltd.
