UK HEATWAVE 2022 – STAYING COOL

The first Red Extreme Heat warning has been issued and UK Ministers held an emergency Cobra meeting on Saturday afternoon as the Met Office warned that ‘lives are at risk’.

We have been warned that ‘transport services’ are facing significant disruption due to the heatwave; and people have been advised not to travel and to work from home.

The UK Health Security Agency issued a level 4 heat health warning, announcing a ‘national emergency’.

As a result of climate change (long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns), we are now experiencing more frequent heatwaves that are hotter and last longer. Met Office scientists have been predicting this for years, and it has now hit the UK. We have been warned of the need to adapt homes in the UK for the more intense, and deadly, summer heat that is to come.

SOLUTION – INSULATION

In the winter when temperatures are colder, we insulate our homes to keep the heat in. We insulate our walls with cavity wall insulation / internal wall insulation / external wall insulation, and roofs with loft insulation / room-in-roof insulation / pitched roof insulation, to stop the heat escaping. This means that we can heat our homes at lower temperatures for less time and thus save money.

The principle in summer is similar. If the walls and roofs are insulated then it stops the heat coming in. If you cool the inside of your property with air-conditioning or fans, then insulation will stop the cool air escaping through the walls and roof.

EnergyLink can put you in touch with an approved local installer who has access to this grant funding for Cavity Wall Insulation, Internal Wall Insulation, Loft Insulation, External Wall Insulation, and Room in Roof Insulation.
