Free Insulation Grants for Over 70s

If you’re 70 or older, you may qualify for free home insulation through government schemes designed to help pensioners reduce energy bills and improve home comfort. These grants can cover 100% of installation costs with no upfront payment required.

Current Available Schemes

  1. ECO4 – Main government program for low-income households

  2. Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) – Targets energy-inefficient homes

  3. Warm Homes Local Grant – New for 2025 with expanded support

Over 70s Criteria

Basic Requirements

  • Age: Must be 70 years or older

  • Residency: Must live in England, Scotland, or Wales

  • Property Status:

    • Homeowners can apply directly

    • Private tenants need landlord permission

    • Council/housing association tenants should contact their landlord

Financial & Health Eligibility

You must meet at least one of these criteria:

1. Benefit Recipients

  • Pension Credit (Guarantee or Savings Credit)

  • Universal Credit

  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

2. Low-Income Households

  • Annual household income below £31,000

  • No benefits required for ECO4 Flex eligibility

3. Health Conditions

  • Respiratory illnesses (COPD, asthma)

  • Cardiovascular conditions

  • Mobility issues affected by cold

  • Immune system disorders

Note: Your local council may have additional flexibility under ECO4 Flex rules

Insulation Types Available for Free

1. Loft Insulation

  • Savings: £330-£590/year

  • Ideal for: Homes with less than 100mm existing insulation

  • Process: Mineral wool or sheep’s wool installed between joists

2. Cavity Wall Insulation

  • Savings: £180-£690/year

  • Ideal for: Homes built after 1920 with unfilled cavity walls

  • Process: Foam or beads injected into wall cavities

3. Solid Wall Insulation

  • Internal: Insulation boards fixed to interior walls

  • External: Cladding added to exterior walls

  • Savings: Up to £600/year

4. Room-in-Roof Insulation

  • For converted lofts without proper insulation

  • Uses rigid insulation boards between rafters

How to Apply for Over 70s Insulation Grants in 2025?

Simply complete our online application form. Providing you are entitled to a grant, one of our approved installers will carry out a free, no-obligation survey. The surveyor will verify the suitability of your property and confirm your entitlement to a grant. The installer will then complete the work and claim the grant afterwards on your behalf.
