'Too messy, too difficult' gives false impression of Loft Insulation

26 June 2012

Recent research has revealed that over a quarter of UK homeowners have not had Loft Insulation installed – even though it is possible to get it for free – as they believe it is too messy, too difficult or too much effort.

The research, which was carried out by energy provider E.ON in August 2011, found that 25% of the 2,000 polled shared the belief that Loft Insulation is not worth the hassle, reflecting a misconception of Loft Insulation and the fairly straightforward installation process.

As with any Insulation type, there are a few considerations to take into account; however, as long as the property is suitable, an average size loft will only take about an hour to insulate.

Installers will also take precautions to ensure that having your loft insulated is not messy. Rolls of Insulation are taken into the loft in sealed wrapping, leaving no mess behind in your property. Any mess created during installation will be contained in the loft and in the unlikely event of any coming through the hatch, the Installers will clean it up.

Loft Insulation will be installed on the floor of the loft, therefore any stored items or boarding must be at a minimum; however, it is not necessary to remove all storage and boarding. Installers can work around a few stored items and up to 20% boarding is permitted, for example a walkway to water tanks or storage space around the hatch.

Other considerations to think about are that the loft must be easy to access, have enough headroom for Installers to work and have no damp present.

E.ON’s ‘Love Your Loft’ scheme offers loft clearance, insulation and floor-boarding in one, but has restrictions and starts at an expensive £349. If you find that you have more storage and/or boarding than is allowed for Loft Insulation to be installed, it will work out cheaper to clear the loft yourself or arrange for a local handyman to do it for you.

In addition, rather than paying for Loft Insulation, for a limited time only private households in almost all areas of the UK can get a 100% FREE Grant to cover the full cost of having Loft Insulation professionally installed.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, Loft Insulation remains one of the most cost-effective and energy-efficient home improvement measures. It will act as a blanket, preventing up to 25% of a home’s heat from escaping through the roof, resulting in energy bill savings of up to £175 per year.

This will appeal to the 33% of those surveyed who said that they would get Loft Insulation installed ‘straight away’ when they learnt how much they could save on their energy bills.

The Loft Insulation Grants will also cover the cost of insulating and draught proofing the hatch, lagging any pipework and fitting a walk-board if there is a water tank situated more than 1m away from the hatch.

It is estimated that 42% of UK households with traditional lofts can still benefit from Loft Insulation. Don't wait until Winter when you could benefit most from Loft Insulation, get your home insulated now ready for when the temperatures drop and while waiting times are low.

There is also no guarantee that 100% FREE Insulation Grants will be around until the end of the year, as planned. The scheme will end as soon as funding runs out or targets are met.
