New External Wall Insulation Training Facility

14 October 2013

A new training centre will pave the way for an increase in the number of recognised Green Deal contractors able to provide the installation of External Wall Insulation, it has been revealed.

A new purpose-built training facility based in Merseyside will offer the training required for those looking to learn how to fit External Wall Insulation, with successful participants earning a recognised contractor status for the Government’s Green Deal scheme.

The facility is the work of Weatherby Building Services Ltd, the UK’s largest supplier of External Wall Insulation, sometimes known as Solid Wall Insulation.

The Merseyside training centre features two large classrooms as well as a large practical training area. Here, trainees will learn how to fit the insulation in a variety of different real world situations, including walls with bay windows, gable ends, and curved surfaces.

The unveiling comes as Weatherby looks to triple the number of people it trains as qualified Green Deal contractors. Only qualified contractors are permitted to carry out home improvement measures under the Government’s energy efficiency initiative.

The Green Deal provides upfront funding for energy efficient, carbon-reducing measures, including the likes of Cavity Wall Insulation, Loft Insulation, boiler replacement, and solar panel installation. After these improvements are made, the loan is repaid via a property’s electricity bill.

Under the Energy Company Obligation, a second Government scheme running alongside the Green Deal, those meeting specific requirements can apply for a grant to pay for free External Wall Insulation, free Cavity Wall Insulation, free Loft Insulation, or free boiler replacement. The means tested grant is available to low income households receiving certain benefits as well as certain ‘hard to treat’ properties.

The Government reports that up to 8 million households could benefit from external insulation, and is looking to aid as many as possible. This in turn has led to an increase in the need for qualified External Wall Insulation fitters, something Weatherby has identified.

Weatherby’s training manager, Steve Dewberry, explains: “There is huge potential for EWI projects under the Green Deal and [Energy Company Obligation] schemes and we were becoming inundated with requests from installers looking to train and up skill their workforce to meet the demand. “In addition to individuals and installation companies, we are also in discussions with a variety of colleges to provide a training module as part of relevant courses, which will ensure there are more skilled labourers entering the industry.”
